South St. Paul leaned on its top two veterans in a 5-1 quarterfinal victory against Hibbing/Chisholm.

Senior defenseman Anna Barlow, playing in her fifth state tournament, scored two goals. Senior goalie Sydney Conley made 23 saves in her 63rd win, a program record.

No. 5 seed Hibbing/Chisholm (12-13-2) led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from senior forward Sarah Fairbanks. But the deficit failed to rattle the Packers.

“We’ve been down by a goal a few times this season and we’ve come back to win,” Barlow said. “I don’t think we panicked. We do pretty well at staying calm and getting the job done.”

Two Hibbing/Chisholm penalties gave No. 4 seed South St. Paul (16-11-2) a 5-on-3 advantage and the Packers pounced. Barlow and junior forward Abigail Felton tallied power-play goals just 1 minute, 5 seconds apart in the second period.

“That changed the whole game and I was not happy,” Hibbing/Chisholm coach Pete Hyduke said.

His players kept battling, forcing Conley to stop several breakaways. “Without Syd, we wouldn’t be where we are,” Barlow said. “With four or five breakaways, you’d expect one to go in. She keeps us confident.”

South St. Paul scored a season-best five goals.

“Syd Conley must be going, ‘Thank you; finally,’ ” South St. Paul coach Dave Palmquist joked.

First Report

South St. Paul topped Hibbing/Chisholm 5-1 in the last quarterfinal game.

Junior forward Abigail Felton struck for her second goal of the game, this one at 10:57 of the third period, to give No. 4 seed South St. Paul (16-11-2) the needed cushion to reach Friday’s semifinals.

Senior forward Sarah Fairbanks scored the game’s first goal and her ninth this season at 6:42 of the opening period and No. 5 seed Hibbing/Chisholm (12-13-2) took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Two power-play goals and two big saves resulted in a 2-1 South St. Paul lead after two periods.

Senior defenseman Anna Barlow, playing in her fifth state tournament, scored with the man-advantage at 10:58. It was Barlow’s team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Felton followed just one minute, five seconds later. Sophomore defenseman Makena Burke assisted on both goals. She later scored her team’s fifth goal on a blast from the blue line.

At the other end, senior goalie Sydney Conley turned a pair of Hibbing/Chisholm breakaways aside in the second period to keep the Bluejackets from adding to their goal total. Conley’s 63 career victories are the most in South St. Paul program history.

A rebound goal from freshman forward Mackenna Emery at 2:59 of the third period gave South St. Paul a 3-1 lead.

The Packers edged the Bluejackets 1-0 on Jan. 2. AJ Deering’s goal was the difference.
