Centennial sophomore forward Gabby Hughes hasn’t slowed her scoring streak and leads the state with 39 goals.

She scored twice in a 3-1 win over No. 9-2A Blaine on Jan. 12 as the No. 11-2A Cougars swept the regular-season series with their Northwest Suburban Conference rival and made seeding for Class 2A, Section 5 a little tougher.

Hughes, who has 10 multi-goal games this season, has been held without a goal just three times, though she recorded assists in two of those contests.

Blake’s Carly Bullock (34-13-47) trails Hughes by five goals for the state lead. She has eight hat tricks and just two games without a point.

The No. 2-1A Bears (17-2-2, 2-1) relinquished the top spot in the Class 1A rankings after falling to No. 1-1A Breck 1-0 in overtime on Jan. 9, but they can solidify their position as a favorite to win the state title by closing out the regular season with victories over No. 3-1A St. Paul United and No. 3-2A Edina.
