Eleven minutes into the first period Wednesday, Luverne goalie Emilie Bartels was fending off shots from every direction. She had 15 saves and was on pace for about 73 against the furious Blake attack.

But she could only sustain the effort for so long.

Sarah Chute broke through with a goal at 9:26 in the first. After that, Blake scored again. And again. And again, all unanswered until the clock hit zeros.

Behind four goals from Carly Bullock, Blake won 10-0 in the third Class 1A quarterfinal at Xcel Energy Center.

“We talked a lot about playing as a team and staying competitive and playing every shift,” Blake coach Shawn Reid said. “In a game like this, it might be easy for a player to try to outrun everybody, but we didn’t see that.”

How dominant was Blake?

Luverne managed only two shots on goal, and Blake goalie Anna Kruesel set a tournament “record” for fewest stops in a game.

Also, Luverne’s Bartels had 24 stops in the first period — one shy of the tournament record for most in a period. Blake’s 60 shots on goal in regulation was a tournament record.

Blake got two additional goals from Lily Delianedis and others from Madeline Wethington, Maddie Tix and Addie Burton.

The result was maybe more of a blowout than expected, but not totally a surprise. Luverne was making its first state tournament appearance.

“Now that we’re here, now that we see what it takes, we know what it’s going to take to bring our game to another level,” Luverne coach Tony Sandbulte said
