Eagan became the first girls' hockey team to qualify for the state tournament

Eagan became the first girls' hockey team to qualify for the state tournament with a 2-1 victory over Apple Valley Wednesday night in the Class 2A, Section 3 championship game at the Veterans Memorial Center in Inver Grove Heights.

Eagan (22-3) dominated the first two periods of play, outshooting Apple Valley (14-13-1) 29-6 and taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Alanna Stangl and Emily Johannes. University of Minnesota recruit Megan Wolfe assisted on both goals.

Apple Valley applied pressure in the third period and managed to cut the lead to one on Rachel Goodman's power-play goal at 13:42, but Eagan goalie Emma May kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Eagan will be making its seventh trip to the state tournament. Its best showing came in 1997, when Natalie Darwitz paced the Wildcats to a runner-up finish.
