The Star Tribune picks the best of the best for the All-Metro first team

Katie Mclain | Anoka | Goalie | Senior

Helped the Tornadoes remain a highly ranked team all season with steady, confident play. Earned all 22 of the team's victories by stopping 93 percent of the shots she faced and allowing 1.65 goals per game. Took her place among a strong field of goalies in the Northwest Suburban Conference.

Milica McMillen | Breck | Defense | Senior

Three-time All-Metro first-team selection. Dominates games at both ends of the ice and draws raves for her booming, accurate shot. Breck's career leader with 272 points. Rarely comes off the ice in big games. Matured into a great leader this year who helped the Mustangs to a fourth Class 1A tournament appearance.

 

Hannah Brandt | Hill-Murray | Forward | Senior

Selected as the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year. Quite simply the finest player in more than a decade. Widely considered on par with legends Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell. Recorded 59 goals and 13 hat tricks. One metro-area coach noted, "If she comes through the neutral zone with the puck, you're done."
 
Lee Stecklein | Roseville | Defense | Senior
 
Keyed Roseville's defense, which squeezed opponents to 23 goals in 28 games and posted 13 shutouts. Smooth and steady for her 6-foot size and possessing great reach, Stecklein added 14 goals and 16 assists to the Raiders attack. Has Roseville in the hunt for its second Class 2A title in three seasons.
 
Jonna Curtis | Elk River/Zimmerman | Forward | Senior
 
Top forward in the competitive Northwest Suburban Conference who finished a stellar career as the program's scoring leader with 279 points. Hard-working player who developed great hands. Scored 36 goals and added 25 assists this season. Earned praised for finishing her chances while making her teammates better.
 
Kate Flug | Roseville | Forward | Junior
 
Offensive dynamo scored 44 goals this season and elevated her game in the postseason. Started section playoffs by scoring two consecutive hat tricks. Showcased her soft hands on two electrifying goals in the section final. Helped U.S. Under-18 national team win a silver medal at the world championships in the Czech Republic.

Second Team

FORWARDS
 
Dani Cameranesi | Blake | Junior: Outstanding skater used speed and shiftiness to score 48 goals in 22 games. Scored nine playoff goals.
 
Kelly Pannek | Benilde-St. Margaret's | Sophomore: Strong, physical and hard to stop around the net. Pumped 43 goals into the Red Knights' offense.
 
Kate Schipper | Breck | Junior: Twists defensemen into knots with her speed. Scored 26 goals, including a team-high four shorthanded.
 
DEFENSE
 
Sam LaShomb | South St. Paul | Senior: Tallied 29 goals and 33 assists. Plays with an edge and can unleash a bomb of a shot.
 
Sidney Morin | Minnetonka | Junior: Smart defender who led Skippers in plus-minus for the third consecutive season.
 
GOALIE
 
Madison Denny | Andover | Senior: Competitor who captained the Huskies and became the heart and soul of their defense. Allowed two or fewer goals in 22 of her 24 regular-season starts.

HOW THE TEAM WAS PICKED

The Star Tribune's All-Metro teams and Metro Player of the Year were chosen based on nominations from metro-area coaches, conversations with a panel of coaches and staff observations. Hannah Brandt, Kate Flug, Milica McMillen and Lee Stecklein have committed to play for the Gophers. Jonna Curtis will play for New Hampshire. Katie McLain is undecided.
