Three-goal second period makes the difference for Hornets

Mounds View’s Maddie Peake raised her stick to celebrate what she thought was a last-minute game-tying goal against No. 3 seed Edina.

Kneeling on her leg pads with her glove behind her, Hornets’ goaltender Maddie Dahl looked to the officials.

They did not signal a goal.

Dahl’s save of Peake’s point-blank attempt allowed Edina to withstand an inspired Mounds View comeback in a 3-2 quarterfinal victory Thursday in the Class 2A girls’ hockey state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

“I still believe that I saw something there,” Peake said. “I should have buried it harder so I knew for sure it went in.”

Edina head coach Laura Slominski defended the official’s call, saying, “It’s not like Maddie moved forward afterward or put her glove way back and swooped it in. From my view, though, it was very scary.”

Edina, runners-up in the past two state tournament, scored all of its goals in the second period. Liz Trautz and Mounds View’s Kathryn Larson traded goals to make it 1-1.

Lizzy Otten answered Mounds View’s goal with one of her own just 41 seconds later on a blast from the blue line. But Sarah Nielsen’s goal, with 15 seconds remaining in the period, was the one Mustangs’ coach Pete Aus called “a killer.”

Freshman Taylor Williamson made a veteran play, setting up Nielsen with a deft touch pass just outside the goal mouth.

“It’s easy to play with Taylor because she’s always looking to make plays,” Nielsen said. “She knew that leaving it there would leave it open.”

Edina advances to play No. 2 seed Roseville in Friday’s semifinals. The teams played to a 2-2 draw at Edina in December. Roseville pulled the goalie and defenseman Lee Stecklein scored late to tie the game.

Sarah Nielsen, Edina
Nielsen was very active on the ice for the Hornets, scoring a goal and tallying an assist. She helped the Hornets dictate possession and tempo by winning twelve faceoffs. Nielsen's scored the deciding goal in the game.

Kathryn Larson, Mounds View
Larson scored a goal and chalked up an assist to make it a tight game from start to finish. Her assist with just over a minute remaining gave the Mustangs an opportunity to tie the game in the final frame.

Emily Eide, Edina
Emily assisted on the first and third goals for Edina and helped her team maintain control of the puck for the majority of the game.
