Blake rallies from 5-0 deficit to beat No. 5-ranked Pioneers in overtime

No. 5-ranked (Class 2A) Hill-Murray seemed to be on course for a breeze of a victory against No. 2 (Class 1A) Blake on Saturday at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood.

The Pioneers scored three goals in the first period, had an overwhelming shot advantage and showed no signs of slowing in the second when Jessica Bonfe and Becca Steffen scored to give them a commanding five-goal lead.

Blake slowly chipped away, and in overtime Jordan Chancellor completed the miraculous comeback with her second goal of the afternoon, giving the Bears a 6-5 win.

"I could not be more proud of my team than I am right now," Bears' coach Shawn Reid said. "Hill-Murray dominated is in the first period. We were playing against a Class 2A team, one that is ranked in the top five and on the road. We were down 5-0 and just did not quit. This was one of the most exciting games I have ever been a part of."

Hill-Murray defenseman Brittney Anderson was called for interference just 19 seconds into overtime, but the Pioneers killed the power play.

Blake kept the momentum it garnered through the power play and was able to spring Chancellor on a two-on-one.

She corralled the puck at the Pioneers' blue line and skated it in. She had no doubt she was going to shoot it on goalie Mari Johnson, who took over for Leah Patrick in the third.

"I knew it was a new goalie and a lot of shots were going in," Chancellor said. "If I didn't score, I had one of my teammates crashing the net to get a rebound."

Equally as impressive as the comeback was the shooting percentage of Blake. It only had 12 shots on net, scoring on 50-percent of them.

In the second period alone the Bears only had four shots on goal. All of them went in.

"I have never heard of that before," Chancellor said. "We heard we had four goals and four shots, I kind of laughed about it."

Blake's Carly Bullock scored twice, including the game-tying goal with only six seconds left in the third period.

The shot totals were not high, but the Bears' momentum was.

"Going in (to overtime), as a coach you are always pretty nervous," Reid said. "For the girls, they see that they give you 2 minutes to rest and get ready, well to them that was 2 minutes, 30 seconds to long. They were ready to go."

Sarah Bobrowski and Mekenzie Steffen each had a goal and an assist to lead Hill-Murray, which drops to 12-3-0.

Chancellor had two goals, Bullock had two goals and an assist and Alex Lovaas chipped in with a goal and two assists for the Bears, who improve to 13-5-0.

"It was a pretty fun game," Chancellor said. "We were pretty down after the first period, but we picked each other up and made a huge comeback and came out with a win."
