TIGERS RIP MAYO IN SATURDAY MATINEE

by Pat Rupp

Six different Farmington players netted goals and 10 got into the scoring column in a 9-1 blowout, non-conference win over Section 1AA rival Rochester Mayo Saturday afternoon at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The victory upped the Tigers’ season record 2-1-1 and 1-0 against section opposition.

Mayo (0-7) was winless heading into the contest but had come within a goal of section contenders Rochester John Marshall and Owatonna.

“They (Mayo) certainly work hard and did give themselves some opportunities,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said, “but in the end our girls just kept coming and lit the lamp early and often.”

The winners put the game away quickly, scoring four unanswered goals in the opening period and then added three in the second and two more in the third.

Ellie Moser, Bailey Kelley and Jenna Gerold each scored a pair of goals for Farmington. Lexie Budensiek, Emily Rubins and Taylor Anderson each found the net once.

“We had three first-time goal scorers (Gerold, Budensiek and Anderson),” Holmes said, “and that is always a nice occurrence for building confidence.”

Moser and Kelley each added an assist for three-point performances. Marissa Agerter and Savannah Tucker each chipped in with a trio of assists. Maddi Oines handed out a pair of assists and Kiley Braatz recorded one.

Abby Bollig got her first start of the year in goal for the Tigers and played well, turning away 14 of 15 Spartan shots.

Farmington finished with a one-sided 32-15 cushion in shot opportunities.

“Abby was very solid, making some tough saves at times when our defensive zone coverage broke down,” Holmes said.

“As a goalie it is not always easy to play in a game where the offense is so hot because it can lead to some wide open lapses that the goalie is asked to cover up mistakes.”

There won’t be much time to savor the win as the girls resume their first trip through their South Suburban Conference schedule Tuesday night with a home match-up against Shakopee. Saturday they head to Burnsville for another tough South Suburban contest.

“We are still trying to find our rhythm with different line combinations and personnel shifts,” Holmes said. “Against Mayo we were able to use a couple new combinations that can be options for us to put together in various situations against good teams over the next couple of weeks.”
