MAPLE GROVE, JR., GIRLS’ HOCKEY

Wente, a forward, led the Crimson with 29 goals this season. She made the program’s first state tournament trip in school history, falling 3-2 to Eden Prairie in overtime of the Class 2A championship game on Feb. 20.

Q: What was it like to experience Maple Grove’s first state tournament berth?

A: I’m super proud of my team … and getting the support from our student section and parents and grandparents was awesome to cheer us on. We were super excited to be in the state tournament, and to get as far as we did was awesome.

Q: During the state semis, you beat Hill Murray, which had a 40-game win streak. How important was that win for the team?

A: We always wanted to beat Hill-Murray because they were undefeated for a couple of years. So we just kept pounding and we left everything on the ice and we did not want to lose that game.

Q: This was coach Amber Hegland’s first year at the helm. What was it like getting a new coach this season?

A: When Amber came in, she did a lot with our culture and bringing the community together. … She made our family closer. She’s always been positive, and she’s awesome. I love her.

Q: How much motivation does this season give you going into next year?

A: It’s very surreal. Hopefully, we can get back to the Xcel Energy Center, because it was an awesome experience and it was so fun.

Q: You’re committed to the Gophers. Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?

A: I’ve always grown up watching the Gophers. ... It’s been my dream school since I was younger and when they started recruiting me, I knew it was the right fit.
