The reasons for Lakeville South’s hot start are numerous, but defense – and specifically the play of senior goaltender Chelsea Laden – has to be at the top of the list.

Laden, who helped the Cougars to back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years (including a state tournament berth in 2009), has allowed just three goals in five games this season as Lakeville South has jumped out to a 5-0 start.

She has 97 saves in those five games – including a 28-save game against Lakeville North to avenge a section playoff loss a season ago – and has posted three shutouts. Heading into Tuesday night’s game against Bloomington Kennedy, Laden’s .969 save percentage was leading the state among goalies with more than 150 minutes played.

On offense, five different players have at least three goals for Lakeville South – and six players have at least six points.
