The points just keep piling up for Mound-Westonka’s Taylor Kuehl.

She added six more to her impressive total Tuesday night, scoring four goals and two assists in a 10-2 road victory over Hutchinson.

“We played our best 51 minutes of the year,” said White Hawks head coach Bob Kuehl, Taylor’s father. “We’ve had periods where we’ve been outstanding, but last night all of our lines and our defense were really buzzing.”

Perhaps it helped to have a few college scouts in building.

Wisconsin and Minnesota each had representatives at the game to primarily watch Hutchinson’s Sara Carlson. She didn’t disappoint, putting the Tigers up 1-0 just 27 seconds into the game.
Bob Kuehl opted to keep his top line out on the ice as a challenge and to make a statement.

“We were a little sloppy on that first shift but after that they got fired up,” he said. “With those coaches there, I told our players, ‘They might be here to watch [Carlson] but you never know.’”

Junior forward Heidi Dotzenroth scored less than two minutes later, and the rout was on.

“We skated every girl on the roster,” Bob Kuehl said, noting the first career varsity goals for third-liners Morgen Niccum and Hannah Sterne. “Every year we throw more [expectations] at them, and they respond by being a hard-working group.”

Taylor Kuehl’s output against the Tigers, giving the senior forward a state-best 37 points for the season, is nothing new. She burst onto the girls’ hockey scene as an eighth-grader when she led the Mississippi 8 in scoring with 43 points. She has only improved since.
Kuehl racked up 141 points in the last two seasons (91 goals), earning a scholarship to Ohio State.

In Tuesday’s game, Kuehl popped in a pair of first-period goals then one more in the second and third periods. Two of the goals were scored shorthanded, giving her three for the season compared to just two power-play goals on the year.

“She’s just more relaxed,” Bob Kuehl said. “Her college commitment was wrapped up before the school year. There’s no pressure of people coming to watch every game. She’s worked with a personal trainer every Sunday and does before-school hockey. She’s part of a great group.”
