Big game coming Tuesday night.

Warroad players celebrate their 1A title in February

Roseau vs. Warroad immediately brings to mind classic match-ups on the ice between the two storied programs. Although most of those memories come from the boys' side of things, the girls' programs are going strong as well and will renew their rivalry Tuesday night in Warroad.

Warroad is the defending Class 1A champion and has started the season 9-2 with losses coming at the hands of state powers Minnetonka and Edina. Head coach David Marvin doesn’t think the losses – no matter how impressive the competition – sat well with his team.

“They expected to win those games. They are good teams but they expected to win those games. They believe in themselves. When they don’t win they take it personally.”

One of the state’s leading goal scorers, Karley Slyvester, heads up a team that has averaged more than seven goals a game. This will be the Warriors' first conference game of the season and despite the early season success, they could be looking up at the rival Rams if they lose Tuesday night.

Although the Rams are just 5-5-1, they have already played some of the state’s top competition. Tuesday's game will continue that tough early schedule.

“As a coach it is an easy game to coach in,” Marvin said. “You don’t have to worry about getting your kids ready. They are going to come to the rink ready to go. ... I think the atmosphere (for these games) is as good as any as I have ever played in or coached in.”
