In a marathon-like game, Stillwater senior Hannah Anderson played the hero in the Ponies' 3-2 overtime win against Cretin-Derham Hall Tuesday night.

The Raiders, ranked No. 7-2A by Let's Play Hockey, dominated the early part of the Suburban East Conference game with quick and precise passing that led to an early first period goal by junior Emily King. The Raiders' speed and passing helped the club hold the lead for the rest of the period.

Early in the second period, the Raiders struck again quickly after junior Erin Meyers netted the second goal off of a pass from freshman defender Cece Ziegler to give Cretin-Derham Hall a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders ran into some penalty trouble, giving No. 19-2A Stillwater three power plays early in the game, but the Ponies failed to score on any of them.

Shortly after the Raiders' goal, momentum changed swiftly in favor of coach Lee Gillespie and the Ponies.

“We had to tighten up and control our defensive end, which ultimately opened things up for us," Gillespie said.

The Ponies responded when senior Kate Bartelings beat the Raiders goaltender Megan Meyers to pull Stillwater within one. A minute and half later, the Ponies pulled even with Cretin-Derham Hall after a goal from freshman Lauren Einan.

No goals were scored in the third period, but both teams had numerous opportunities to break the 2-2 tie. The most notable opportunity came late in the period when Cretin-Derham Hall rung one off the post.

During the eight-minute overtime, fatigue set in for both sides, but coach Gillespie had a plan to keep his skaters fresh.

“We inserted a fourth line here and there, and also kept the shifts short,” Gillespie said.

Some late game penalties were given out as the Raiders received a double minor for roughing and goaltender interference, giving the Ponies a power play late in overtime. Shortly after the penalty, Stillwater was able to set up its offense, and after a shot came in from the point, Anderson scored off of a rebound to give her team the overtime road victory.

“We had the momentum since we came back in the game, and we also had a good rush on the power play and the rebound was right there for me,” Anderson said. “I knew we had to outwork them if we wanted to win.”

Stillwater goalie Olivia Knox was a key factor in the win, stopping 36 of 38 shots. Although she gave up the two goals early in the game, Knox was resilient both mentally and physically.

“I always play like the score is zero-zero, and when something goes wrong I just reset and focus on the next play,” Knox said.

Meyers had 18 saves for the Raiders.

First Report

Late in overtime Stillwater netted the game-winning goal to beat Cretin-Derham Hall 3-2 at Highland Arena Tuesday night.

The Raiders, ranked No. 7-2A by Let's Play Hockey, took the lead against the Ponies thanks to senior Jordan Hansen and sophomore Emily King connecting on the game’s first score.

Cretin-Derham Hall (2-2-1) scored again early in the second period to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead over Stillwater (3-1-0), but that only motivated the No. 19-2A Ponies.

In just a minute and a half, Stillwater scored two goals. Senior Kate Bartelings and freshman Lauren Einan scored back-to-back, quickly tying the game.

The game went into overtime, and after a double minor penalty on the Raiders, the Ponies took advantage of the extra attacker, with senior Hannah Anderson scoring the game-winning power play goal late in overtime.

Stillwater goaltender Olivia Knox stopped 36 of 38 shots to help the Ponies pull out the victory. Raiders' goalie Megan Meyers stopped 18 of 21 shots.
