Louis Schmitz Classic at Farmington

Lakeville North and Rosemount highlight this year's Louis Schmitz Classic at Farmington. The teams are on course for a semifinal matchup next Wednesday. But first, the Irish, ranked 12th, must get by Hastings in the quarterfinals while the No. 13-ranked Cougars get a first-round matchup with Sartell-St. Stephen. No. 18 Eastview and Apple Valley are also in the tournament along with the host Tigers. The championship is set for next Thursday.

Kaposia Classic at South St. Paul

It's not quite the Stanley Cup Finals, but the official bracket of this year's Kaposia Classic depicts a cartoon skater celebrating with the famed trophy. And that's fitting. For girls' hockey, this is the pinnacle event. Now in its 16th year, the Kaposia Classic has been around as long as girls' hockey has been an official sport in Minnesota. Top-ranked Minnetonka and No. 2 Roseville headline this year's field. If the brackets play out, the two would meet in the finals at 7:15 p.m. on New Year's Day.

ABRA tournament

No. 3 Edina plays host to a tough field of teams, featuring No. 5 Coon Rapids, No. 8 Lakeville South, No. 9 Hill-Murray and defending ABRA tournament champion Irondale (No. 11). And Hopkins, which made the Class 2A state tournament the past two seasons, is in the mix. Players who have made college commitments include future Gophers Rachael Bona of Coon Rapids and Meghan Lorence of Irondale, Edina's Sami Reber (Harvard), Christie Brauer (Connecticut) and Greer Vogl (Vermont), Grand Rapids/Greenway's Morgan Illikainen (Dartmouth) and Lakeville South's Chelsea Laden and Morgan Fritz-Ward (both to Quinnipiac).
