Mustangs break a three-game losing streak in victory

Going into Tuesday night’s Suburban East Conference matchup, Roseville and Mounds View appeared to be two teams headed in opposite directions.

Roseville was the undefeated powerhouse, sporting a 9-0 record and a No. 2-ranking in the Associated Press Class 2A state poll. The Raiders were fresh off a tough 3-2 victory over No. 6, 2A Stillwater and had their sights set on a date Thursday against No. 5 Coon Rapids.

Conversely, Mounds View was moving along in spurts, showing enough gumption and grit to hang with the state’s best teams but unable to put together a meaningful streak of victories. After winning five of their first seven games -- four of them conference victories -- the Mustangs had dropped three in a row, including back-to-back conference losses to Hastings and White Bear Lake.

Perhaps Mounds view caught Roseville looking ahead. Or maybe the Mustangs were just tired of a two-week winless stretch. Whatever the reason, Mounds View (6-5) played its most complete game of the season, holding Roseville (9-1) scoreless over the final two periods en route to a 3-2 upset victory.

Senior goalie Sara Lewnstein epitomized Mounds View’s resolve, bouncing back from a shaky start. Lewnstein gave up goals to Roseville on the first two shots she faced, but then held the Raiders scoreless over the final 45:38 of the game.

Mounds View’s defense deserved much of the credit. Roseville was averaging nearly 32 shots on goal per game but was held to just 17 by the Mustangs.

Maddie Peake, Mounds View’s most polished player and biggest offensive threat, assisted on all three goals, the biggest being Kathryn Larson’s game-winner, a power-play goal at 1:07 of the second period.
