If the Edina girls’ hockey team goes on to the state tournament success many anticipate, it’s likely to look back to Tuesday’s 5-4 comeback victory over Breck as a catalyst.

Both teams were ranked No. 2, Edina in 2A, Breck in 1A. Breck, led by three goals from Grace Zumwinkle, the state’s leading scorer, jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the second period. Edina rallied, scoring two goals in the final minute of the second period before Grace Bowlby tied the score with less than two minutes left in third period.

The Hornets (6-0) carried momentum into overtime, with Emily Oden scoring the game-winner on a power-play just 22 seconds into the period.

“A comeback like that is big at any point in a season,” Edina coach Sami Reber said. “To score four unanswered goals against an extremely talented team like Breck shows that our team is going to keep fighting until that final buzzer, no matter how out of reach a victory may seem. I couldn’t be more proud to be coaching this group of girls.”

Hopkins’ girls get payback

Hopkins girls’ basketball coach Brian Cosgriff never talks about revenge, but it’s safe to say his team played with a little extra motivation in Tuesday’s 83-43 rout of highly regarded St. Michael-Albertville.

Almost one year ago to the day, Hopkins suffered one of the worst defeats in Cosgriff’s tenure, getting blown out at St. Michael-Albertville 76-48. The Royals made certain early in Tuesday’s game that a repeat was not going to happen. They raced out to a 54-26 halftime lead and held St. Michael-Albertville to 31.3 percent shooting from the floor (15 of 48). DLayla Chakolis scored 28 points and Paige Bueckers added 21 for Hopkins.
