Class 2A

Edina retained the top slot in the state high school coaches' poll with a 5-4 overtime win over No. 2-1A Breck last week. It was the closest game of the season for the Hornets, who received all 10 first-place votes.

Minnesota-bound Emily Oden (9 goals, 4 assists), Minnesota Duluth commit Anna Klein (3g, 9a) and Harvard commit Lolita Fidler (2g, 8a) have Edina (7-0) on a 4.85 goals-per-game average.

If the Hornets can continue this offensive production, they have a good chance at not only staying atop the Class 2A rankings but seriously contending for their first state title.

Maple Grove (8-1) remains second, going undefeated since losing to Edina to open the season.

Despite an 8-0 record, Blaine checks in at No. 4. The Bengals have yet to face a ranked Class 2A opponent, but they’ll have the chance to improve their rankings with a Dec. 20 matchup against No. 6-2A Elk River.

Overall the top 10 is largely unchanged, but the bottom half of the rankings have experienced a shakeup, though only Eastview (5-5) moved more than one spot. The Lightning fell from No. 16 to No. 19 after losses to No. 5-1A St. Paul United and No. 9-1A Lakeville South.

Class 1A

With 10 first-place votes, Blake retains the top spot in Class 1A. The Bears, winners of seven straight games, reaffirmed their superiority last week with a 5-1 win over No. 4-1A Thief River Falls and No. 2-1A Breck.

Led by sophomore Izzy Daniel (7 goals, 5 assists), junior Dartmouth commit Sarah McClanahan (3g, 9a) and freshman Lily Delianedis (4g, 7a), the Bears are averaging 4.15 goals per game with no signs of slowing up.

Behind Blake, the remaining top 10 teams remain unchanged from last week. Breck is second, thanks to Minnesota commit Grace Zumwinkle’s state-leading 24 goals.

Third-ranked Thief River Falls (10-2) has had one of the hottest starts of any team this season, including a handful of lopsided wins. With eight skaters who have at least 13 points, the production is spread around enough to overcome any individual droughts.

Delano/Rockford (9-1) rises from No. 11 to No. 8 this week, the highest jump of any team. The Tigers followed up a 1-0 loss to Dodge County with a 6-0 win over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato.

Part of the early season success of Delano/Rockford can be attributed to the goaltending duo of freshman Grace Glasrud and junior Karly Schmidt, who have combined for a 0.97 goals-per-game average and a .955 save percentage.
