Roseau goaltender Kiana Flaig admits to feeling a little frustration as the Rams stumbled to five losses in their first seven games. But that frustration is quickly melting.

Flaig stopped 46 shots, including all five in a shootout, as Roseau came from behind to beat Cretin-Derham Hall 2-1 in the first round of the Mid-Winter Meltdown tournament at Eden Prairie.

Defenseman Ellice Murphy scored Roseau's one goal in the shootout and lifted the Rams to their fifth consecutive victory while ending Cretin-Derham Hall's five-game win streak.

"It was a hard first few losses," said Flaig. "But we're getting into it now. We're getting better every game."

Roseau lost five seniors from last season's squad, including three-year varsity goaltender Jenna Baumgartner, who is playing collegiately at Post University. Flaig said it's taken awhile for a new group to become well-acquainted. But a tough early schedule, which included Edina (ranked No. 1 in Class 2A by the state coaches' poll), Breck (No. 2-1A), Thief River Falls (No. 3-1A) and Eden Prairie (No. 3-2A), was a factor as well.

Flaig and freshman Rylie Bjerklie, who started last week in a 3-2 victory at Moorhead, have proved capable replacements for Baumgartner. Roseau coach Steve Huglen said his team has played very well defensively but is still working to improve its offense.

With leading scorer Lindsey Santl (10 goals, 2 assists) not dressed against Cretin-Derham Hall, the Rams struggled through the first couple of periods. The Raiders outshot Roseau 17-7 and led 1-0 on senior Audrey Hapka's second-period goal through the game's first 34 minutes.

The lack of offense led Huglen to move defenseman Jenna Byfuglien to forward in search of an offensive boost. The move paid dividends when Byfuglien scored at 8:35 of the third period to tie the game and Roseau doubled its shot total from the first two periods.

"We're still figuring out our identity," Huglen said. "We know we're a good, strong defensive team. We are still working things out offensively."

The game goes into the record books as an overtime tie for both teams. Cretin-Derham Hall falls to 7-3-2 (5-2 in conference play) while Roseau is at 6-5-1 (3-1 in conference play).

Another test awaits the Rams today in the semifinals against an Eden Prairie team that won 6-0 at Roseau on Dec. 2.
