Proctor/Hermantown's winning streak has hit double digits.

The Mirage, ranked No. 5 in the Class 1A coaches' poll, grabbed their 10th straight victory and took the Schwan Cup Gold Division championship with a 4-1 win over Class 2A opponent Lakeville North on Wednesday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

Senior Callie Hoff tallied a hat trick for ProctorHermantown in just her fourth game back this season after tearing her medial collateral ligament.

“Yeah, feels good to be back,” Hoff said. “This tournament was big for us. We didn’t expect to come down and win three.”

It was certainly an added bonus for the Mirage to have Hoff back in the lineup. She’s scored eight goals and added four assists for 12 points in the four games since her return, including the three in the Schwan Cup this week plus a game against International Falls on Dec. 22.

“It wasn’t a bad thing for us to learn how to play without Callie Hoff,” Mirage coach Glen Gilderman said. “Callie is the kind of person as a player that makes everybody else better, too.”

Proctor/Hermantown (12-3, 1-0), a team that came in averaging 4.29 goals per game, didn’t waste too much time getting on the board Wednesday. Just 1:33 into the game, the Mirage had a 1-0 lead thanks to junior forward Mariah Haedrich’s second goal of the season.

The No. 18-2A Panthers (7-7) responded in the first period with eighth-grader Erin Olson’s eighth goal of the season. She buried the puck on the doorstep off a rebound from senior defenseman Lynne Freese's initial shot from the point.

The teams took turns exchanging offensive zone time in the second period, creating a few icings along the way.

Hoff broke the 1-1 tie with about five minutes left in the second. She jammed the puck home right on the doorstep after finding a pocket to the left side of the goaltender. She scored her second of the game with 2:25 left to make it 3-1 on a breakaway.

“I just deked her and went right,” Hoff said.

The third goal was an empty-netter with 37 seconds left in the game. Sophomore goaltender Ryan Gray made 27 saves for the Mirage. Sophomore Kallie Schneider stopped 16 shots for the Lakeville North.

The Mirage haven’t lost since a 7-0 defeat to Breck on Dec. 2 and came into Wednesday’s game outscoring opponents 60-33.

Even with the bonus of getting Hoff back from her injury, Gilderman said this is probably the deepest and best skating team that they’ve had in the program, even after going 20-9-1 and finishing fourth in the Class 1A state tournament last season. They expect more from the players, who are also willing to be pushed a bit, he said.

The Mirage's first game of the year was against New Prague, a 4-1 loss.

“But it was like everybody was kind of waiting for someone to do something," Gilderman said. "And I think that we learned… that you can’t wait for somebody else to do something, you have to do it yourself.”

As a result, they’ve pushed each other as a team, he said.
