In a game of unusual penalties and great goaltending, Maddy Fiedler and Chaska/Chanhassen (8-8) defeated New Prague (7-6-2, 4-0) by a score of 3-1 at the Chaska Community Center on Tuesday night. 

The first period slipped by rather uneventfully for everyone except the goaltenders. Sydney Culshaw made 12 saves for the Trojans and Erica Peterson recorded six for the Storm Hawks. The second period, however, more than made up for the lack of goals, and penalties, in the first.

Clare Kelly opened the scoring with an even strength goal assisted by Lydia Passolt giving Chaska/Chanhassen a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the frame. The Storm Hawks rode the momentum until senior Maddy Fiedler picked up three penalties in less than six minutes, beginning at the 8:08 mark. As soon as she emerged from her tripping penalty, she returned for an unsportsmanlike conduct minor and again for interference.

The Trojans didn't score during their power plays, but after the six minutes of penalty killing on Fiedler's behalf, the tired Storm Hawks finally broke, allowing New Prague's Lindsey Bjerke to even the score with .09 seconds left in the period.

Storm Hawks coach Jeff Wahl said he didn't feel the need to say anything to Fiedler about the penalties.

"She's been here a long time and I know her pretty well," Wahl said. "Penalties like that are quite out of the ordinary for her, but it was a sign she was playing super aggressively. Our goal is to win out and that's what we will have to do."

Wahl said that all three calls were the correct ones but Fiedler disagreed and used her frustration to fuel her game.

"Some of the penalties weren't called the way I like them to be called," Fiedler said. "I came out of the box motivated and mad."

While Wahl and Fiedler didn't agree about the penalties they both knew she needed to make it up to her team. 

The teams came out for the third period tied 1-1 and combined for one shot through the first six minutes until Fiedler stole a puck in the offensive zone, deked around the goalie and buried what was eventually the game winning goal.

Later, with the Trojans' Shannon O'Rourke already in the box for elbowing, goalie Sydney Culshaw lost her stick, leading to a rather unusual penalty and a Storm Hawks' two-skater advantage.

"One player actually picked up the goalie stick and had her stick and the goalie stick, one in each hand," Wahl said. "Then the puck hit the goalie stick and they called her for playing the puck with two sticks. The ref had to explain it to both coaches."

Fiedler scored her second goal of the night after O'Rourke emerged the from the penalty box, sealing the 3-1 victory for Chaska/Chanhassen with 42.8 seconds remaining.

Culshaw saved 30 of the 33 shots she faced, including a sprawling glove save after she had lost her stick. Leading scorer Catie Skaja did not play in the game which hampered the Trojans' offense.

"We knew they would be scrappy and fight hard, they always do," Wahl said. "We always have very close games and I love watching their team play."

It was a game of ups and downs for Maddy Fiedler as the Chaska/Chanhassen Storm Hawks defeated the New Prague Trojans 3-1 at the Chaska Community Center on Tuesday night. 

Fiedler was quiet in the first period, committed three penalties in less than 10 minutes in the second period and scored two goals, including the game-winner, in the third period. The Storm Hawks, ranked No. 12 in Class 2A by the state coaches' poll, outshot the No. 8-2A Trojans 32-16. 

Both goalies, New Prague's Sydney Culshaw and Chaska/Chanhassen's Erica Peterson, had shutouts after the first period. Clare Kelly opened the scoring for the Storm Hawks (8-8) with a goal early in the second, which was answered by the Trojans' Lindsey Bjerke in the closing seconds of the period.

Fiedler's goals in the third broke the tie and later sealed Chaska/Chanhassen's victory.

New Prague is 7-6-2 after the loss, but still sits atop the Wright County Conference with a 4-0 record.
