Blaine girls’ hockey won its fifth game in a row, scored four goals, won the shots-on-goal battle 47-8 and shutout an opponent for the eighth time this season in a 4-0 victory over Northwest Suburban Conference, North Division foe Champlin Park (10-9, 6-4) Tuesday night at the Champlin Ice Forum.

The Bengals, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A according to the state coaches’ poll, started the season 8-0 and have only stumbled in back-to-back games against Anoka and No. 4-2A Elk River. Still, they need to work on finishing more scoring chances, according to their coach, Steve Guider.

“We’ve been doing a good job moving the puck, I would say with the exception of tonight,” Guider said. “I thought we were very sloppy moving the puck, a lot of missed passes. We weren’t as sharp tonight as we have been.”

That might explain why Blaine, coming in scoring nearly seven goals a game, and the Rebels remained scoreless until about the middle of the game. The Bengals did a better job of finding their lanes more in the second and third periods, said junior forward Gabby Rosenthal, rather than staying so close together.

Rosenthal scored a pair of second-period goals to help her team get rolling. She had a three-point night, extending her team-leading points total to 40 for the season. On the first goal, she jammed the puck in with an assist from her senior linemate Paige Beebe. Rosenthal scored again with just 43.4 ticks remaining in the period – a shorthanded goal assisted by Emily Brown.

The second came off a two-on-one rush. Rosenthal said she couldn’t get a pass off.

“So I just saw the upper left and shot it in,” she said.

It was a great shot, Guider said.

“Gabby Rosenthal, I don’t know if there’s a better penalty killer in Minnesota,” Guider said. “She single-handedly kills a lot of time.”

Beebe scored a power-play goal in the third on a 5-on-3 opportunity while also notching two assists. Senior defenseman Emily Brown got a shot through traffic from the point for the final goal of the game in addition to her assist on Rosenthal's second.

In goal for the Bengals, senior Morgan Cin made eight saves for her fifth shutout. Sophomore Baleigh Shuck stopped 43 shots for the Rebels.

Despite the lack of finishing, Guider said he likes the energy his team plays with, emphasizing speed and depth. The Bengals consistently skate three solid lines, and in a recent game against Hopkins, Blaine put out the third line against the Royals' top line for added flexibility.

The top line is made up of the Bengals’ leading scorers Rosenthal (16-24-40), sophomore forward Ramsey Parent (19-17-36) and Beebe (12-20-32), all of whom are Division I-commits.  Rosenthal and Parent will go to Ohio State, while Beebe will head to Bemidji.

“They’re so explosive when they get on the ice, and the tide really changes when they get on the ice,” Guider said.

Blaine will continue to focus on finishing more opportunities and capitalizing on scoring chances. The Bengals have created the good looks, now they just have to finish, Guider said.

“It just seems like we’re throwing the puck at the net instead of just finishing to our target,” he said. “That’ll be the focus tomorrow.”

First Report

Junior forward Gabby Rosenthal scored a pair of second-period goals to help Blaine girls’ hockey roll to a fifth straight win with a 4-0 victory over Champlin Park (10-9, 6-4) Tuesday night at the Champlin Ice Forum.

The game was scoreless at the first intermission, despite a 19-2 shot advantage for the Bengals, who came into the contest scoring nearly seven (6.93) goals per game. They dominated the period with offensive zone time and some quality scoring chances, many from point-blank range, that kept Baleigh Shuck, the Rebels' sophomore goaltender, busy.

Rosenthal’s 15th goal of the season came in the middle of the second off the rush. She jammed the puck in with an assist from senior linemate Paige Beebe. Rosenthal scored again with just 43.4 ticks remaining in the period with senior defenseman Emily Brown recording her 29th assist of the year on the goal.

In goal, Baleigh Shuck stopped 43 shots for the Rebels while Morgan Cin made eight saves for Blaine (13-2, 7-2). It was the eighth shutout of the season for the Bengals and fifth for Cin.
