Budensiek, Defense Lead Tigers Past Blaze

by Pat Rupp

Junior Lexie Budensiek scored two goals and goalie Emily Auge did the rest in a 2-1 South Suburban Conference win Thursday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

Tuesday’s victory was the second straight for Farmington, who was in the middle of a three-games-in-four-nights grind, and upped its overall record to 10-9-1 and conference mark to 5-8.

If the final score sounded familiar, it should. Six of Farmington’s 10 wins have come by a 2-1 margin.

“This was another tough conference battle against a very stingy defensive team,” Tiger coach Jon Holmes said. “Like us, Burnsville is only giving up two goals per game and plays a solid defensive zone.

“We played pretty hard for the most part, although we had times where we had some lapses in effort and judgement where we gave them some breakaways or odd man rushes where Emily (Auge) bailed us out. “

Budensiek led a strong third line effort that produced the game’s first score midway through the first period only to have Burnsville’s Amanda Jackson knot the score with a goal in the final 20 seconds of the opening frame.

Budensiek scored the game-winner, her fifth of the season, on an assist from Megan Bernu early in the second period and Auge and the defense shut down the visitors the rest of the way.

“Getting both goals from Lexie, Kenna, Tuck, and Kiley (all playing together) was very nice to see,” Holmes said.

“We had multiple scoring chances again and it would have been nice to see us cash in more, but in the end I am very pleased with our past two conference games in only giving up two goals.”

Auge had arguably the best night of her abbreviated season after returning from an illness, stopping 25 of 26 shots to post her second win in five starts. Farmington held a 34-26 advantage in shots on goal.

“We need to continue with that solid D-zone play and hopefully cash in on more of our opportunities as we progress toward the playoffs,” Holmes said. “The team chemistry is getting better by the day and by the game. This is very promising for a young team getting close to the end of the season.”

The Tigers wind up their three-game week Friday night by hosting Shakopee at Schmitz-Maki. Farmington eked out a 2-1 win over the Sabers when the teams meet earlier in the season.
