Five finalists for 2017 Senior Goalie of the Year announced

The five finalists for the Senior Goalie of the Year were announced Thursday, and the group includes a pair of teammates who individually boast some of the state's best goals-against averages and save percentages, the goaltender from Class 2A's top-ranked team and another who has won 18 games.

The quintet own a combined 1.40 goals-against average, a .935 save percentage and a 3.77 grade-point average.

The award goes to Minnesota's top senior goalie, with the winner being announced at the Ms. Hockey Awards Banquet on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the St. Paul RiverCentre.

Past winners include Breck's Jenna Brenneman (2016), Frances Marshall of Thief River Falls (2015) and Hopkins' Erin O’Neil (2014).

The five finalists for the Senior Goalie of the Year Award are listed below in alphabetical order.

Breanna Blesi

School: Maple Grove

College Committed: Wisconsin 

Blesi and fellow finalist Coco Francis have split goaltending duties this season, backing No. 3-2A Maple Grove to a combined 20-4-1 record and 1.08 goals against average. Blesi has a record of 8-2-1, including five shutouts, and ranks eighth in state with a 1.18 goals against average and ninth with a .943 save percentage.


Coco Francis

School: Maple Grove

College Committed: Union

Francis has accumulated a 12-2 record, with both losses being by one goal each. She has not allowed more than two goals in any game, and has only allowed two goals on three occasions. Her 0.98 goals against average ranks third in state. Francis has accounted for four of Maple Grove's shutouts and has a save percentage of .945, seventh best in the state.


Anna Goldstein

School: Edina

College Committed: Middlebury

Goldstein has earned an impressive 17-1-1 record for No. 1-2A Edina, her lone loss coming by only one goal She has recorded five shutouts, all since the beginning of January. In 19 games played, Goldstein posts a .918 save percentage and ranks ninth in state with a 1.26 goals against average.


Elizabeth Kubicek

School: Minnetonka

Kubicek has played in 18 games for No. 7-2A Minnetonka, posting a 1.67 goals against average and .932 save percentage. She has recorded three shutouts and allowed just one goal on eight other occasions. Kubicek has a record of 10-6-2.


Emma Polusny

School: Mound Westonka

College Committed: St. Cloud State

Polusny played in 24 regular season games, accumulating a record of 18-6. Her 18 wins is tied for fourth most in the state. She earned four shutouts while posting a 1.91 goals against average and .939 save percentage, making more than 40 saves on four occasions. In Mound Westonka's first playoff game, Polusny recorded a shutout, making 10 saves.

The MN Girls' Hockey Hub poll is based on opinion and not used to determine who is named Senior Goalie of the Year. The winner is selected by a panel of high school coaches and based on their consultations with several area college coaches.
