Roseville senior captain Madison Gaffney had the shot on her stick that could have made the Raiders’ Class 2A, Section 4 semifinal matchup with Hill-Murray a one-goal game late in the third period.

But Pioneers goalie Ava Bailey made what her coach Bill Schafhauser called “the biggest save of the season.”

Already up 2-0, Bailey’s stop sparked two Hill-Murray goals in 14 seconds and the top-seeded Pioneers defeated Roseville 4-0 inside Aldrich Arena.

“That was their top scorer and to make that save at that point in the game was just a huge boost,” Schafhauser said.

That kind of boost was absent in the first period as Hill-Murray failed to score and went into the locker room 0-0.

Despite the lack of momentum, it took only 22 seconds in the second half for the Pioneers to get on the board.

Morgan Helgeson split two Raiders defenders at the blue line and beat Roseville goalie Madison Lehto over her right shoulder.

“I told them to trust in the system and to trust in your teammates,” Schafhauser said of the quick second period goal. “We are used to playing against systems like Roseville. It can be hard to keep focus but we did and it paid off.”

Lehto stopped 28 of 32 shots, but Roseville’s offense failed to score against Bailey, who stopped all 25 shots she faced

Late in the second period, leading scorer Abigail Boreen stick handled across the slot and beat Lehto far left to increase Hill-Murray’s lead to two.

Boreen’s goal was followed by Bailey’s heroics in net and the Pioneers netted twice more to advance to the section final at 7 p.m. on Friday.

“Playing five-on-five, this was a game,” Roseville coach Vic Brodt said. “We had a breakaway, one shot hit post, and we just needed something to go our way tonight and it just didn’t happen.”

First Report

After a first period of scoreless Class 2A, Section 4 hockey inside Aldrich Arena, Hill-Murray (22-4-1) scored four unanswered goals and defeated Roseville 4-0 on Tuesday night.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A by the state coaches' poll and top in Section 4, scored 22 seconds into the second period when Morgan Helgeson took a pass from Lindsey Featherstone and made a move for the net.

Helgeson beat two Raiders (10-15-2) defenders at the blue line before firing a wrist shot over the right shoulder of goalie Maddison Lehto for a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders’ goalie stopped 28 of 32 shots, but Roseville’s offense failed to score against Ava Bailey.

Bailey stopped all 25 shots she faced in the shutout.

Late in the second period, Pioneers leading scorer Abigail Boreen stick handled across the slot and beat Lehto far left to increase Hill-Murray’s lead to two.

The Pioneers then scored two goals in a 14 second span towards the end of the third period to put the game out of reach.

Hill-Murray will advance to the Class 2A, Section 4 final at 7 p.m. on Friday against the winner of White Bear Lake and Mounds View.
