Hornets rack up three goals in first period

Edina clinched the Class 2A, Section 2 title and a trip to the state tournament in convincing fashion Friday with a 4-1 victory over Eden Prairie.

The No. 1 Hornets attacked No. 2 Eden Prairie goalie McKenzie Johnson early and often, scoring three goals in the first period.

Junior forward Hannah Burns got things started with an unassisted goal 10 minutes and 35 seconds into the game.

Almost exactly one minute later, Edina’s Sami Reber got into the act, scoring her third goal of the section tournament.

Eden Prairie’s Ali LaCombe responded with a goal about 12 minutes in, but three minutes later the Hornets’ Christie Brauer scored her seventh of the tournament on an assist from Reber.

“[Brauer] came out in this tournament and has just been on fire as far as putting pucks in the net,” Hornets coach Laura Slominski said.

On Reber, Slominski said, “[You] can’t ask for much more than her as a player.”

Edina’s assault on the net continued in the second period, in which neither team scored despite each having a power-play opportunity.

Aside from a superfluous empty-netter with the clock winding down, all of the game’s goals came in the first period.

Johnson finished with 40 saves, compared with 15 for Edina’s Maddie Dahl.

Eden Prairie coach Tim Morris was absent for the second game in a row. Eagles assistant Geno Peluso said Morris was tending to “personal matters” unrelated to hockey and that he assumed Morris would be back to coach the team next year.
