Hibbing/Chisholm girls’ hockey coach Emily Erickson said one of her younger players, Allie Bussey, is up for a challenge.
Erickson said when she puts Bussey in tough situations, the sophomore forward answers. Saturday night against Orono, Bussey answered — twice.
Bussey netted the overtime game-winner against the Spartans at Orono Ice Arena, a 3-2 victory a night after the Bluejackets beat Irondale 4-0, to help keep Hibbing/ Chisholm undefeated. The sophomore winger, who has five goals on the season, also helped ignite a Bluejackets offense that was staring down a 2-0 hole midway through the second period while Spartans skaters threatened again on a power play.
During the power play, Bussey stole the puck from an Orono (1-3) skater and turned it into a shorthanded breakaway goal to put Hibbing/Chisholm on the board.
“[Bussey]’s young but she’s a competitor,” Erickson said. “She’s not afraid of a challenge — she actually enjoys it.”
Hibbing/Chisholm (3-0) came into Saturday riding a two-game shutout streak on the shoulders of junior goalie Abby Edstrom. After 23 saves Friday night, and 16 during the season opener at Eveleth-Gilbert, Edstrom gave up her first goal of the season, a shot by Orono sophomore forward Megan Marzolf that ricocheted off the inside of her pad to find the back of the net. She finished the night with 25 stops.
Orono went ahead 2-0 after senior forward and University of Minnesota-Duluth commit Lizi Norton (3-2-5) scored on a power play.
“To be honest, I wasn’t pleased with our overall work ethic,” Erickson said about the first period. “The girls knew that and they picked it up halfway in the second.”
“We lacked passion,” she added.
But Bussey’s shorthanded goal started the Bluejackets’ comeback. Sydney Haben, a junior, tied the game with four minutes and 14 seconds left in the third period. It was her first goal of the season.
Then, another challenge for Bussey and the Bluejackets: trying to carry that momentum into the extra eight-minute, sudden-death period in an arena hours away from home.
“My goal going into it was to score the overtime winner,” Bussey said.
Freshman Dorothy Kearney handled the puck in the neutral zone and looked to her right and found Bussey, who reared her stick back and let the puck rip past Spartans goalie Anna Lisle, who suffered her first loss of the season Saturday.
Asked about her coach’s comments on putting her in challenging situations, Bussey smiled and said she likes it.
“I definitely like the challenges,” she said. “You can improve every day.”

Allie Bussey netted two goals, including the overtime winner, for Hibbing/Chisholm in a 3-2 win over Orono Saturday night at Orono Ice Arena.
Bussey (5-4-9), a sophomore, took a pass from freshman Dorothy Kearney in a rush to the Orono goal a minute, 49 seconds into the extra period, sending it past Spartans goalie Anna Lisle for the Bluejackets’ third win this season.
Orono (1-3) sophomore forward Megan Marzolf notched the game’s first goal with 10 minutes, 56 seconds left in the first period. The shot, assisted by sophomore defender Sydney DeCubellis and junior forward Sarah Gustafson, bounced off Hibbing/ Chisholm goalie Abby Edstrom’s pad and into the back of the net. It was Marzolf’s first goal of the season.
Orono went ahead 2-0 after senior forward and University of Minnesota-Duluth commit Lizi Norton scored her third goal of the season on a power play.
But on another Hibbing/Chisholm (3-0) penalty, Bussey stole the puck from a Spartans skater and turned it into a shorthanded breakaway goal at eight minutes, 17 seconds. Hibbing/Chisholm tied the game on a Sydney Haben goal midway through the third period.
Lisle stopped 17 shots in the Orono goal, and Edstrom, who was riding a two-game shutout streak, stopped 25 shots.
