Seven in a Row and Counting

Ellie Moser recorded her second hat trick of the young season to pace the Tigers to a come-from-behind 5-2 South Suburban Conference win over Lakeville South Saturday afternoon at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The victory was the seventh straight for Farmington, 4-1 in conference play, and gave coach Jon Holmes’ team sole possession of third place in the league standings behind unbeaten Eagan (5-0) and Lakeville North (5-1).

“One of the neat things about this group is their ability to find ways to win while also being open to understanding that we still have many areas of our game where we can improve,” Holmes said.

One of the areas where Holmes would like to see a change is the slow start that has at times plagued his team this season. South scored twice in the opening period to take a two-goal lead to the first intermission.

“We were missing out on all the small things that add up to solid play,” Holmes said. “The quick first steps and the angles we were taking to follow the puck rather than cutting the puck off to get first touch were not happening.”

Moser’s first score of the night came 20 seconds into the second period and gave her team a spark. Seventy seconds later a goal by Emily Rubins tied the count and late in the period Moser’s second of the night gave the Tigers the lead for good.

“We definitely got better at those small things and we did a nice job of going downhill to the net and taking control of the offensive zone play,” Holmes said. “But we still have a lot to continue working on to tighten up all zones of the rink.”

Marissa Agerter, who assisted on two of Farmington’s first three goals, netted her fifth of the season to give the winners some breathing room midway through the final period. Moser slammed in an empty-netter to cap the win and complete her hat trick.

“She is really focusing on using her complete tool belt to her advantage,” Holmes said. “She is fast, strong, and has a wonderful wrist shot, but in the first couple of weeks she may have been trying to do a little too much going outside her real strong suits. As of late she has really been embracing her strengths and it has been paying off in goal production.”

Moser’s trio of goals gives her a team-high 13 for the season. She also leads in total points with 16. With her pair of assists, Agerter upped her team-high total to seven. She ranks second in total points with an even dozen.

Brenna Fuhrman, Cassie Knutson, Jayden Seifert and Megan Bernu each had an assist in the victory

Emily Auge patrolled the Tiger nets for the second consecutive game, standing in for co-starter Abby Bollig who was out with lingering effects from the flu bug, and finished with 27 saves.

“After the first period she stymied everything that came her way and kept a commanding presence for us to play with confidence,” Holmes said.

The Tigers outshot the Cougars for the game by a 34-29 margin.

Farmington will be looking for its eighth straight win Thursday night when it hosts South Suburban rival Shakopee. Saturday the Tigers head to Eagan for an early season showdown with the league-leading Wildcats.
