No. 3 Centennial defeats No. 1 Edina in girls' hockey

Centennial, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, beat top ranked Edina 3-2 on Friday in girls’ hockey. It was the first loss of the season for the Hornets (9-1-0).

Anneke Linser set up both of Gabbie Hughes’ goals to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead early in the second period.

Hannah Chorske scored Edina’s first goal midway through the second. CC Bowlby tied the score with her goal in the third period.

Maija Almich scored the go-ahead goal with just over three minutes left in the final period; Alli Pitlick got the assist.

The Hornets outshot Centennial 30-17, but Mackenna Stoterau’s 28 saves made the difference.

Holy Family/Waconia 1, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 0 (OT): Alex Pellicci got the shutout after making 25 saves for the Wild Fire. Molly Garin scored the winning goal off assists from Maeve Kelly and Chloe McEnelly.

Chisago Lakes 2, Woodbury 0: Jenna Lawry scored twice to lead the Wildcats past the Royals. Danielle Burgen had two assists. Megan Lerfald made 27 saves to earn the shutout for Chisago Lakes.

Boys’ hockey

Blake 6, Wayzata 3: Aaron Frenkel had a hat trick to lead the unranked Bears in an upset of the Class 2A, No. 9 Trojans. Gavin Best, Tristan Broz and Blaker Weyerhaeuser also scored for Blake. Luc Monney, Colin Schmidt and Ike Taraszewski scored for Wayzata.

Mound Westonka 4, Delano 3: Michael Lindell and Hank Nagel scored two goals in the final period to give the White Hawks a win over the Tigers, ranked No. 9 in Class 1A. Justin Daly had a hat trick in the second period, scoring all of Delano’s goals. Aleksi Partio and Philipp Weltin also scored for Mound Westonka.

Totino-Grace 3, Luverne 1: Jack Bonfe scored twice for the Eagles in a come-from-behind win. The Cardinals’ Nick Harder kicked off the scoring with a goal late in the second period. Branden Lee added an empty-net goal for Totino-Grace. Will Larson made 27 saves for the Eagles.

 

Boys’ basketball

Minnehaha Academy 81, Eastview 69: Terry Lockett scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Redhawks past the Lightning in the semifinals of the TCO Holiday Classic at Augsburg. Javonni Bickham added 20 points. Sophomore Tate Machacek led Eastview with 22 points. Minnehaha Academy, the top-ranked team in Class 2A will take on Hopkins, No. 3 in Class 4A, in the championship on Saturday. The Royals defeated Fridley 105-65 as five players scored in double digits. Zeke Nnaji led the way with 26.

Elk River 61, Rogers 59: Jordan Belka scored a game-high 39 points for the Royals, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Elks. Jack Burger scored 17 to lead Elk River. Rogers had a chance to tie the score late, but two trips to the free throw line sealed the win for the Elks.
