After three games in three days, both Mahtomedi and Thief River Falls’ legs were depleted through overtime in the Schwan’s Cup Silver Division final at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, sending the teams to a shootout.

Thief River Falls senior Tessa Jorde faked a point-blank shot in front of Mahtomedi goalie Johanna Ficcadenti who froze just enough for Jorde lift the puck into the left-side netting, clinching  the tournament crown after a 2-2 tie Saturday night.

The game went into overtime after a late third period goal by Jaimee Nelson, who, while falling, lifted a rebound shot into the back of the net.

“That was the best goal ever,” Jorde said. “She jumped twice then fell — it was nice to get that goal to ensure we’re still fighting for it.”

Ranked second in the Class 1A coaches’ poll, the Prowlers (11-1-2, 5-1-0) outshot No. 20-1A Mahtomedi 13-4, but wore down as the game progressed as they ran two lines for the majority of the game.

Freshman Shelby Breiland attacked the net and lost the puck through a crowd of sticks before Jorde picked it up, faked left and pulled the puck to her backhand around Ficcadenti with under two minutes left in the first period.

Despite being the favorite in the game, Thief River Falls coach Brett Johnson acknowledged the fatigue of his team’s top two lines as they Prowlers were on the ropes after the first period.

“Not going to say we had our best hockey the whole weekend, but they found a way, they battled and competed,” Johnson said.

The Zephyrs (8-6-1, 3-1-0) rallied around Ficcadenti’s 31-save night and rolled three lines through overtime.

Alexandra Saenger netted her first varsity goal off a feed across the slot from Abby Hansen.

Kylie Krawczyk chased the puck off the draw and backhanded a shot to the back of the Prowlers net 42 seconds later to give the Zephyrs the lead entering the final period.

The Zephyrs may have left without the hardware, but coach Bill Mauricio was satisfied with his team’s resurgence and effort, saying the fatigue didn't play a factor in his team's performance.

“Once we got over the shellshock of the first period we competed more and we said ‘we’re not gonna sit back and watch, we’re gonna take it to them’,” he added.
