Sometimes the first sign that a player scores a game-winning goal in overtime to send her team to the state tournament is when she gets mobbed by her teammates.

Breck sophomore forward Ally Qualley didn’t even see the puck go in.

She scored the goal on the rebound only 1 minute, 50 seconds into overtime for a 3-2 victory for No. 2-ranked Breck (16-10-1) over Orono in the Class 1A, Section 5 girls’ hockey championship Thursday at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis.

“I was kind of on my back behind the net when it went it,” Qualley said. “I saw them all coming, and that’s when I knew.

“It’s an amazing feeling. Tears of joy after that goal.”

Her 14th goal of the season came after Orono (9-15-3) tied the score with a pair of goals in the final 3:26 of the third period.

Orono sophomore Sydney DeCubellis scored a power-play goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. That sparked the Spartans, who pulled their goaltender with 1:25 left. Then eighth-grade forward Iyla Ryskamp tied the score with 37.5 seconds left. On a shift before the goal, the Mustangs sent a shot just wide of the empty net for what could have been a clinching goal.

Breck coach Ronda Engelhardt wanted to reset her team before overtime.

“I think we had lost the momentum,” Engelhardt said. “Orono came out really strong those last five minutes.”

The Mustangs held a 1-0 lead after two periods with a goal from junior forward Carly Beniek. Freshman Sadie Lindsay scored with 8:07 left in regulation.

For the past five years, the Mustangs came out on the losing end of the section championship, often in overtime to rival Blake. This year, the rival Bears moved up to Class 2A. Breck is headed back to state for the first time since 2012, the year the Mustangs won their only state title in five trips.
