Current MGHCA President Bill Halbrehder, started coaching in 1965, in the Roseville school system. After a career at UMD, and a stint with the St Paul Steers in the USHL, an eye injury ended his playing career.
Bill Coached at North St Paul for 21 seasons and had over 300 wins with the boys program, and just recently stepped away from 4 years of coaching the North St Paul girls. In between, he served as Activities Director for 7 years, and then spent 5 years as an assistant coach in the Augsburg College Women’s Program.
During his stint as AD, he helped start girls hockey at North St Paul, and has run the Section 4AA Girls Hockey Tournament for the MSHSL since the beginning. In his 25 seasons as head coach at North St Paul, he had only one below .500 percentage season. He is a member of the Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame (1991), the boy’s high school Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame (1995), and was recently inducted in to the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame (2010).
His wife Barbara has played women’s hockey for 28 years, and currently still plays! She has also served as president of the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association from 1999-2001. Bill is no longer coaching hockey as of this season.
