Young and having fun. That pretty much describes Van Batavia, who as a freshman erupted for an eye-popping 45 goals last season while leading the Cardinals to just their second state Class 1A tournament appearance. She started last season with 10 goals in her first four games and finished the season having scored three or more goals in six games. Her pinball-machine scoring totals shouldn’t have come as a surprise, given she scored 30 goals in 26 games as an eighth-grader and 23 goals in 24 games a seventh-grader.
