Getting a fast start after a seven-hour bus trip to the Twin Cities was important for Warroad on Friday night, and Warriors senior forward Hannah Corneliusen made sure her team got it.

“We had an easy team to start our season with, so we had to make sure we were getting our chances [against Lakeville North] and capitalizing on them,” Corneliusen said. “We don’t sit around like that much so we had to come out fast.”

Not two minutes had passed in the first period when Corneliusen beat Lakeville North senior goalie Nicole Smrekar with a shot from in tight to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Corneliusen’s quick strike helped guide the Warriors to a 4-1 victory over the Panthers (0-3, 0-0) at Lakeville Ames Arena.

First Report

Three goals in the first period were all Warroad needed to pick up a 4-1 road win at Lakeville North on Friday night.

Warroad senior forward Hannah Corneliusen scored twice in the first period, once at even strength and the other on the power play, to pace the Warriors (2-0, 0-0) offense. Teammate Julianna Teske wrapped the period with a late strike.

The teams traded goals in the second period, as senior center Brooke Power got the Panthers (0-3, 0-0) on the board, but she was answered by Warriors junior forward Sydney Phaneuf with 34 seconds left in the second period. Neither team scored in the third.

Junior goalie CJ Lanctot earned the win in net for Warroad, stopping 16 of 17 shots.

Nicole Smrekar, a senior, started in goal for Lakeville North and took the loss, allowing three goals on seven shots. Junior Nina Santiago came on in relief to start the second period for Lakeville North, and had 15 saves.

The Panthers were 0-for-3 on the power play, and the Warriors converted on one of five attempts with the extra skater.
