Tigers Maul Mayo in Section Opener

by Pat Rupp

Second-seeded Farmington scored seven unanswered goals in the first period on the way to an 11-0 rout of seventh-seeded Rochester Mayo in the opening round of the Section 1AA tournament played Wednesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The contest was a mismatch of major proportions as the Tigers finished the night with a hard-to-imagine 54-2 shots-on-goal advantage.

“The two shots Mayo had were literally dump-ins from just inside the red line and the rink was certainly titled our way in heavy fashion,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said.

“We knew coming into this game that we were going to need to focus on the little things and the process regardless of the overall score or outcome. The girls did a great job doing that because those are tough games to play in on both sides of the coin.”

The first period onslaught was paced by Brenna Fuhrman and Liv Helleson who each found the net twice as the Tigers outshot the Spartans 21-1. Both of Helleson’s goals came on the power play where Farmington finished the night a perfect three-for-three.

Abby Gehrke, Sadie Long and Sam Moehle also tallied goals in the first period for the winners.

“The real story of the game was the first period,” Holmes said. “The girls came out ready to play and after a few early flurries that caught cross bars and a couple of goals were waived off, they kept grinding and finally found that twine.”

The Tigers peppered the Mayo goal with 22 more shots in the second period but only one found the mark. Carly Lancaster (from Jayden Seifert) did the honors.

Seifert, Madison Kadrlik and Kiersten Wood added goals in the final period to end the big scoring night for the home team.

“We made some adjustments in the second and third periods and spread the rink out and found playing time for everyone,” Holmes said. “That made the game continue on a smooth path but also turned down the heat on the scoring.”

Holmes said he was especially glad to see Madison Kadrlik get into the scoring column with her first goal of the season.

“It was nice to see Madison get rewarded for her hard work after all the chances she has had this season,” he said.

Seifert filled up the stat sheet with a goal and four assists. Moehle finished with a goal and two assists. Grace Auge dished out two assists and Gehrke, Long, Izzy Zwart and Makenna Kadrlik each had one.

Ryleigh Furlong and Rylee Bartizal split the goaltending duties with each finishing with a single save.

The blowout win set up a Saturday night semifinal match-up with Dodge County at Schmitz-Maki. Dodge County was a 6-0 winner over Rochester John Marshall in its section opener.

“I have seen them play numerous times this year and we have a solid scouting report,” Holmes said. “We match up well with them and it should be a good game. They are a nice team and go hard which will give both teams a much different game than they had in the quarterfinals.”

Farmington enters the game with an overall record of 16-10; Dodge County owns a 14-11-1 mark.
