A record-setting offensive barrage fueled Warroad’s 10-0 victory rout of Rochester Lourdes.

The No. 2 seed Warriors posted records for shots on goal in a game (74) and in a period (34) and dominated the first Class 1A quarterfinal Friday at Xcel Energy Center.

“I thought we played well,” Warriors coach Dave Marvin said. “We moved our feet and we moved the puck.”

Senior forward Genevieve Hendrickson, a Ms. Hockey Award semifinalist, opened the scoring by finishing a give-and-go with younger sister Tayla. For the elder Hendrickson, tallying a goal after posting just one assist in two section playoff games signaled Warroad’s leading scoring had not lost her touch.

“I don’t think it was a crisis or anything,” Marvin said. “All she cared about is that we won those section games. And then today, it was her turn.”

Hendrickson later completed a hat trick, giving her 30 goals this season.

Marvin said he enjoyed seeing his half dozen new varsity players gain experience at Xcel, a stage Rochester Lourdes (9-9) players struggled to navigate.

“Only about half the players on our team returned from the state tournament last year and I think the size of the moment got the better of us,” said coach Laura Vannelli, adding that the speed and depth of Warroad (20-1) also played a role.

“They have disciplined, smart hockey players up and down the roster,” Vannelli said. “We have similar abilities, but we only have 11 skaters to work with.”

First report

Warroad, a small-school girls’ hockey state tournament fixture, seized control of its first game.

A three-goal first period fueled a 10-0 rout of Rochester Lourdes on Friday at Xcel Energy Center in the first Class 1A quarterfinal.

Played before a sparse crowd, limited by COVID-19 restrictions and undoubtedly travel distance as well, the game lacked atmosphere. But No. 2 seed Warroad (20-1) maintained its intensity.

Genevieve Hendrickson, a Ms. Hockey Award semifinalist, opened the scoring by finishing a give-and-go with Tayla Hendrickson. Additional goals from Kate Johnson and Maddie Lavergne gave Warroad the early edge.

The Warriors added four additional goals in the second period to leave Rochester Lourdes (9-9) behind.

Genevieve Hendrickson later completed the hat trick. Warroad is making its 12th state tournament appearance since 2006.
