Down 1-0 and 2-1 at points in the game, the Skippers still managed to come out with the victory against the Trojans on Tuesday.

They were down a goal at the first intermission. Same thing at the second intermission. But the Minnetonka Skippers, ranked No. 2 in the Jan. 5 Class 2A coaches' poll, weren’t sunk.

Still, Skippers coach Tracy Cassano told her team in the second locker-room break that she wanted to see more intensity, heart, passion and a fire in the final period.

“Share the puck and do all the things that we talk about detail-wise, but I wanted to see more urgency and fire and passion,” Cassano said. “I felt like they, from the drop of the puck in the third period, they played hard for 17 minutes.”

First Report

Minnetonka overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits before scoring two third-period goals on the way to a 3-2 victory over Lake Conference foe Wayzata on Tuesday at Pagel Ice Arena in Minnetonka.

The Trojans (12-6-1) went up 1-0 and took the lead again after giving up a power-play goal in the second period. But the Skippers tied the game 20 seconds into the third period before the go-ahead goal a few minutes later.

The Skippers (14-3-0), ranked No. 2 in the Jan. 5 Class 2A coaches' poll, rebounded from a 2-1 loss at North Wright County in their last game. Minnetonka has outscored opponents 94-25 this season.

Senior Sophia Johnson made 16 saves for the Skippers, while Wayzata senior Annika Lavender stopped 25 shots.

The two teams meet again to end the season Feb. 5 at Wayzata.
