North Nips Tigers on Late Goal

By Pat Rupp

Lakeville North scored a power play goal with 1:12 remaining in regulation to pull out a 3-2 win over Farmington Thursday night at Ames Arena in Lakeville.

The win gave the Panthers a split in the regular season series between the two teams. The Tigers prevailed 5-4 when the two teams meet at Schmitz-Maki Arena in early December.

The Farmington (7-11) loss was its sixth in its last seven outings and followed a familiar pattern with one period essentially deciding the outcome.

The visitors roared out of the gate, leading 2-0 after one period on goals by Sam Moehle (from Kenna Kadrlik) and Abby Gehrke.

North’s Ashley Wagenbach’s pair of unanswered in the second period tied the count heading to the final frame.

“We controlled play in the first and third periods but just lost focus in the second,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “It’s not something that’s new or something we don’t that’s happening. It’s been frustrating for the girls.”

The game stayed knotted at 2-2 until the 15:08 mark when the Tigers’ Reegan Werner was sent to the penalty box for hooking. Forty seconds into the power play the Panthers’ Hannah Weckman stuffed home the game-winner.

“To have a penalty called that late in the game was disappointing,” Holmes said, “because there weren’t any other ticky-tack calls made like that earlier in the game…There were also a couple of non-calls after the goal but the bottom line is we shouldn’t have put ourselves in that kind of position.”

North outshot the Tigers 22-19 in a game that had fewer that usual scoring chances for both teams.

The Panthers scored two of their three goals on the power play, a fact that added to Holmes' disappointment.

“We take pride in our special teams play,” he said, “so that digs a little deep.”

Farmington netminder Kieley Curow stopped 19 of 22 shots in the loss.

Farmington will be looking to return to the win column and start building some momentum for the post-season when it travels to Prior Lake on Saturday for a South Suburban Conference game.
