For Ayla Puppe, the closing seconds of the 2022 Class 2A, Section 1 championship game made for a memory she’ll never forget. It also made for a moment she can't fully recall, either.

Puppe’s goal with four minutes, 32 seconds remaining in the first overtime period lifted No. 2-seed Northfield to a 2-1 victory over No. 1-seed Lakeville South.

The sophomore forward fought off the nerves of a do-or-die scenario to let muscle memory take over. With a team high 39 goals on the season, she knew what to do with the puck on her stick.

First Report

An overtime goal by Ayla Puppe sent Northfield to the state tournament for the first time in five years.

The sophomore forward scored with four minutes, 32 seconds left in the period to lift No. 2-seed Northfield to a 2-1 win over No. 1-seed Lakeville South in the Class 2A, Section 1 championship at Steele County Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna.

Northfield wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Junior defender Lucy Boland scored a goal assisted by senior goalie Maggie Malecha just one minute, 32 seconds into the first period.

Soon after its power play expired, Lakeville South redeemed itself by tying the game on a Josie Grossman goal from senior defender Anika Mader and sophomore forward Brynn O’Neill with 4:01 left in the first.

Northfield had four shots on goal by the midway point of the first period but was bottled up for large stretches, trailing shots on goal 22-6 after two periods and 36-10 for the game.

Cougars senior goalie Payton Lang made eight saves. Raiders senior goalie Maggie Malecha made 35 saves.
