A game called 'pound the post,'— a 4-on-2 situation where players wait for rebounds on the post to pound them into the net, played throughout the season during Maple Grove girls’ hockey practice — paid off in the biggest way in the Class 2A, Section 5 final.
“So if there’s the rebound, you’re there for it,” said Maple Grove junior Ella Olson. “We’ve done it all season long. And I think it definitely has really helped, especially tonight in this big game.”
In a tie game late in the third period Friday, Olson found herself in the perfect spot in front of the crease to pounce on a loose puck. She scored her second of the night with 4 minutes, 3 seconds left in regulation for the eventual game-winning goal in a 4-2 victory over Centennial/Spring Lake Park on Friday at Roseville Ice Arena.

Top-seeded Maple Grove secured its third section championship in four years with a 4-2 victory over 3-seed Centennial/Spring Lake Park. The Crimson have won 10 of their last 11 games this season after adding the Class 2A, Section 5 title on Friday at Roseville Ice Arena.
The Crimson took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Pim Wilhelmy and Ella Olson before the Cougars tied the game with a pair of second-period goals. In the third, Olson scored the game-winner with 4:03 left in regulation, and Stella Retrum scored a power-play goal with 2:23 remaining to seal the win.
In goal, sophomore Dani Strom made 21 saves for the Crimson (20-6-2), while sophomore Kaitlin Groess stopped 25 shots for Centennial/Spring Lake Park.
The game was a rematch of last year’s Class 2A, Section 5 final in which Centennial won 4-1. However, the Cougars had to forfeit their state quarterfinal game against Edina because of a COVID-19 case.
The loss for Centennial/Spring Lake Park (18-9-1) snapped a five-game winning streak to end its season.
Maple Grove, which also beat the Cougars in the regular season, improves to 3-1 against the Cougars in section finals since the Crimson joined Section 5 in the 2015-16 season.
