54 Shots, 1 Goal in Loss to Lakers

Coach Jon Holmes and his Tiger team have seen this movie before and it doesn’t have a happy ending. The plot: Farmington outshoots the opposition in dominating fashion only to come out on the short end of the final score.

The latest showing took place Thursday night at Dakotah Arena where host Prior Lake, despite being outshot 54-26, posted a 5-1 South Suburban Conference win.

The Lakers got off to a quick start with a pair of unanswered first period scores and then after the Tigers pulled to within one early in the final frame, tacked on three more late to win going away.

The loss was Farmington’s fifth in six tries this season. Prior Lake improved to 5-4 while snapping a two-game losing skid.

“What was really frustrating in this game was our inability to keep them off the scoreboard,” Holmes said. “We would go long stretches where we were buzzing and getting tons of scoring opportunities and then we would all of a sudden let up or take a penalty.

“We now have over 100 shots in two games and have three goals to show for it. These weren’t long distance shots either. They were grade A attempts that we just didn’t convert or bounced off a pipe or crossbar.”

Amelia Goblirsch tallied the lone Tiger goal on an assist from Addison Trapp at 5:47 of the second period.

Kenna Underwood became the third Tiger goaltender to start a game this season, finishing with 21 saves in her varsity debut.

“Kenna earned the start,” Holmes said. “She played well but was left extremely vulnerable at times. I feel badly that we didn’t back her up with a more typical defensive effort.”

The Tigers will be going to the South Suburban movies again Saturday afternoon with a matinee encounter with Eastview at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

“The good news is that we are playing well offensively,” Holmes said. “I’m confident those opportunities we have had will start going our way. We will continue to work hard and find that spark that lights the fire.”
