Top performer winner

Mackaylan McGown, Simley. McGown was dishing out passes left and right to her Spartan teammates in their 10-1 win against New Prague on Dec. 30. The senior forward, who has tallied at least one point in all but two of the Spartans’ 15 games this season, recorded a season-high seven points, all assists. McGown leads the state with 33 assists this season.

Top performer candidates

Nora Carstensen, Dodge County. After back-to-back Wildcat losses, the sophomore forward led a pair of wins to close out 2022. She tallied a point on every goal in the two wins, four of those points on power plays. When the Wildcats visited River Lakes on Dec. 27, Carstensen recorded a goal and assist on Wildcat power plays and added another goal at even strength in the 3-1 win. On Dec. 28, Carstensen scored in the first period before adding two more goals—both on power plays—and an assist in the third period in the 4-2 win.

Macy Mueller, Northfield. The sophomore goaltender faced 92 shots last week across three wins, posting a .957 save percentage on the week as she allowed just four goals. Against East Ridge on Dec. 28, Mueller stopped 37 of 40 shots in a 5-3 victory. On Dec. 29, Mueller recorded her fifth shutout of the season when she stopped all 33 shots she faced in the 2-0 win at Farmington. To close out the week, Mueller allowed one goal on 19 shots in the Raiders’ 4-1 win at Eastview.

Cara Sajevic, Gentry Academy. The senior forward is averaging 3.62 points per game this season, thanks in part to her ability to record points in nearly every game she plays. Sajevic tallied a six-point effort against Centennial/Spring Lake Park on Dec. 28, notching her first hat trick of the season and adding three assists in the 7-4 victory. A day later, Sajevic posted another hat trick, leading the Stars to a 5-3 win over Stillwater. She scored one power play goal in each game and one shorthanded goal against Stillwater.

Hunter Sellnow, Alexandria. The sophomore goaltender made a season-best 35 saves on Dec. 29, shutting out the Brainerd/Little Falls offense to earn her second shutout of the season. It was a scoreless game until late in the second period when the Cardinals broke the scoreless tie. Sellnow remained solid in net, allowing her offense to extend the lead and eventually win 3-0.
