Tigers Trounce Trojans in Schmitz Tourney Opener

It didn’t take long for Farmington (9-2) to rebound from a lopsided loss to No. 2 ranked Minnetonka as the Tigers blanked New Prague 9-0 in the opening round of the annual Louie Schmitz Holiday Classic Wednesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.

The winners jumped to a 2-0 after one period on goals by Lexi Giller and Jenna Goblirsch and then saw that lead bulge to seven goals in a 33-shot second period.

Morgan Mitchell had a pair of goals in the uprising and Giller, Amelia Goblirsch and Josey Empey each added one.

Mitchell completed her hat trick 43 seconds into the third and Layla Garofalo added the final score to nail down the non-conference victory.

All in all, a dozen Tigers found their way into the scoring column. Mitchell and Jenna Goblirsch each put together four-point nights with Giller, Amelia Goblirsch and Paige Johnson each tallying three.

Kennedy Meier booked a pair of points on a couple of assists and Payton Blom, Katie Klotz, Norah Klotz and Amara Zens each added one.

Farmington outshot New Prague by an eye-catching 61-15 with junior goaltender Addison Moudry recording her first shutout of the year.

“This was a good bounce-back game for us after sitting on that Minnetonka loss for a week,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said.

“The girls were hungry and they took their hard work in practice into a game situation which was nice to see.”

Holmes credited goaltender Moudry with a couple of key saves to preserve her shutout and keep the momentum with her team.

“All of our lines were buzzing and we tried some new combinations that worked well,” Holmes said. “That’s what we wanted to establish in this first game.”

The final two games of the tournament take place on Thursday and Friday against Section 1AA opponents: Owatonna on Thursday and Northfield on Friday.
