Warroad's Kaiya Sandy (Cheryl A. Myers, Star Tribune file)
On Saturday, Warroad's hockey programs will recognize Native American survivors of the boarding school era, when the U.S. made attendance mandatory in residential boarding schools, during a doubleheader at Warroad Gardens Arena. The girls play at noon, followed by the boys at 2 p.m. Les Sandy, the grandfather of Warroad hockey players and former state champions Katierie and Kaiya Sandy, is a survivor and Ojibwe elder. He will share his experiences living at a Canadian residential school.
