Roseville keeps Hill-Murray's offense at bay

Kate Flug scored twice for the Raiders, including the game-winner, and Hannah Brandt was held to a goal for the Pioneers.

"Could you tell our game plan?" a beaming Vic Brodt asked after Friday's Class 2A, Section 4 championship game.

Roseville's coach had reason to smile. The No. 4 Raiders limited the state's most potent player, Hannah Brandt of No. 1 Hill-Murray, to a lone goal in a 4-1 upset victory.

"The game plan was 6-on-16," Brodt said, meaning his daughter, Hanna, shadowing Brandt. "I told her, 'You need to be unselfish for us to win.'"

The offensive void was filled by Kate Flug. After two consecutive hat tricks in the section playoffs, she settled for a pair of electrifying goals.

The first was a shorthanded breakaway finished off with fancy stick work to make the score 2-0 in the first period. On the second goal, she got behind the defense and roofed a shot over Pioneers goaltender Alexys Woodward with 1 minute and 50 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.

"We let Flug worry about the offense because that's what she does," Brodt said.

For the third consecutive season, the programs met with a trip to the state tournament on the line. Hill-Murray (25-3) won in overtime last year.

Hill-Murray outshot Roseville (23-3-2) 29-16, but Raiders goaltender Erika Allen repeatedly closed the door.

"Erika was probably our best player," Brodt said.

Hanna Brodt took two hooking penalties on Brandt, her friend and former youth hockey teammate, in the first period.

With less than two minutes to play in the second period, Brandt was able to get loose and batted in a rebound. The goal trimmed the Roseville lead to 2-1. She finished the season with an incredible 59 goals.
