Warroad sits just a few miles from the Canadian border, but the two-time defending Class 1A Warriors came back to Minnesota’s capital city Wednesday and left no doubt about their hockey prowess.

Showing signs of being on another mission, Warroad crushed tournament first-timer Detroit Lakes 13-1 at Xcel Energy Center in the tournament quarterfinals.

The drubbing set single-game tournament records for goals by one team, combined goals and goals in a period (nine in the second).

After launching 40 shots on Detroit Lakes through two periods, Warroad attempted just 10 over the final 17 minutes.

“You work on offending as few people as possible and staying healthy,” coach David Marvin said of the third. “And just wish the period would go away, because it’s no fun for anybody.”

The second-seeded Warriors (23-4-1) led 2-0 before the Lakers (12-16) even had a shot on goal. The pressure only expanded from there, and it probably could have been worse.

Up 7-0 with 11 minutes left in the second period, junior Sierra Hanowski whirled around the Detroit Lakes goal crease despite a gaping net in front of her. But instead of shooting, she dipsy-doodled with the puck, using up time to help her team kill a penalty while it skated shorthanded.

Said Lakers coach Gretchen Norby, “It could have easily been 23, 24 to nothing with all those shots.”

Hanowski eventually scored twice for the Warriors and added three assists. Classmate Kayla Gardner had a hat trick and assisted on two other goals.

Detroit Lakes had a goal waved off 4 minutes into the third period after goaltender interference was ruled. Brianna Seebold got the Lakers on the board four minutes later, connecting on her only shot of the period.
