South St. Paul's Emily Reibert scored 17 seconds into a 5-minute power play to break a scoreless tie early in the second period of Saturday's Class 1A girls' hockey state championship game.

The Packers then put the pedal to the floor when Breck was whistled for a minor penalty two minutes later.

But the engine stalled as Reibert took a penalty of her own 36 seconds into the 5-on-3 advantage, and South St. Paul began to get careless with the puck.

"When you get that kind of chance, you have to make the most of it and we did right away, but then we kind of got sloppy," Packers coach Dave Palmquist said. "We certainly wanted to get more there. To go up 2-0 would have been huge -- no question about that."

Breck took just one more penalty the rest of the way.

"To go down 5-on-3 and only give up one goal, it was a victory for us," Mustangs coach Chris Peterson said. "We said, 'Here we go. We got through it. We're down by one, but we've been in this position before.' If we could stay out of the box, we'd be all right."

Warroad's Lisa Marvin netted a hat trick and added an assist in the Warriors' 5-2 Class 1A third-place game victory over Red Wing. It gave the junior, who helped Warroad win back-to-back championships before this year, 34 points in four trips to the state tournament, besting the previous career state tournament points mark of 32 set by Roseville's Ronda Curtin in 1996-99.

"Obviously, I couldn't do it without my linemates, and I wouldn't be here without my teammates. A lot of the credit has to go to them," Marvin said. "Obviously this isn't the game we [wanted] to be in, but it's better than nothing, I guess.

"I'd love to come back here one more time and redeem myself a little bit."

• Edina defeated Lakeville North 1-0 in the Class 2A third-place game. Renee Johnson's second goal of the season scored midway through the second period was the difference. Maddie Dahl made 14 saves for the Hornets.
