The 2013-14 season got off to an interesting start Tuesday as Chisago Lakes held the Red Wing girls hockey team scoreless through the first period.

But that would be the extent of the success for the Wildcats as Nicole Shammel and Emily Stegora scored six times between them before the final buzzer to give the Wingers a 6-0 victory in their season opener.

Schammel, the state’s top-returning scorer, scored three second-period goals to break the scoreless tie. Schammel score her first goal 8 minutes, 49 seconds into the period, with her final tally of the second coming 3:10 later. All of Schammel's one-period hat trick came on assists from Stegora and Reagan Haley.

Schammel then opened the third period with a goal on assists from Hailee Johnson and Stegora before Stegora got in on the goal-scoring act.

Stegora's goals came at at 5:31 and 10:00 of the final frame. Haley would assist on both of those goals as well, with Madelyn Hardyman adding the second assist on Stegora’s second goal.

Red Wing put 30 shots on net, compared to 17 for Chisago Lakes. Winger goaltender Ashley Corcoran made 17 saves to earn the shutout victory.

The Wingers (1-0) are currently ranked third in Class A, and will face 11th-ranked St. Paul United (1-0-1) Thursday before Red Wing’s home opener Tuesday against Mahtomedi (1-0-1).
