Jan. 13: Wayzata takes another swing at Hopkins in our top games of the week

With all five of its girls’ hockey teams ranked in the top eight in Class 2A in early January, the Lake Conference has again proved to be the playground of champions. Much of that prestige is thanks to three-time defending state champion Minnetonka, but the Skippers have plenty of company this winter.

The Skippers are still considered state-championship caliber, although they’re currently ranked No. 2 behind Lake rival Hopkins. Wayzata (No. 4), Edina (No. 6) and Eden Prairie (No. 8) all make the Lake’s wall of honor in the state polls. After the holidays, these superpowers restarted conference play — and the fun ensued as they began knocking each other off.

Only Hopkins has remained standing, winning nine straight games since its only loss (1-0 at Wayzata back on Dec. 14). Meanwhile the Trojans have stumbled with back-to-back losses to Eden Prairie (5-2 on Jan. 4) and Edina (4-1 on Jan. 11).

This Tuesday, the Trojans visit Hopkins hoping to pull a repeat of their first meeting. That’s more than enough juice to make it our top game of the week of Jan. 13-19, 2014
