The winter high school sports season is upon us, and spectators can head to rinks across Minnesota to catch a glimpse of some great hockey.

Our Top Game of the Week could give those hockey fans what they are after as it features two highly ranked teams from The Associated Press Class 2A preseason poll: No. 5 Edina and No. 6 Lakeville North.

The Hornets (1-0-0) are off to a great start with a 10-1 season-opening victory against Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper on Nov. 6.

Edina fills out its roster with a plethora of sophomores and freshmen, but the Hornets can rely on the experience of six seniors, including Taylor Williamson. The forward is has shown she can put the puck in the net, scoring five goals and finishing with six points in Edina's victory. Senior forward Katie Murney also tallied three assists.

The underclassmen, however, haven't let their inexperience keep them from helping out on offense. Sophomore forward Sophie Slattery finished with two goals and freshman forward Emily Oden had a goal and two assists for the Hornets. Freshman defenseman Eva Hendrikson had three assists, while freshman forward Lolita Fidler had a goal and an assist. Sophomore defenseman Grace Bowlby had two assists.

Lakeville North finished third at the Class 2A state tournament last year, but the Panthers stumbled in their first game this season, losing 3-0 at home to No. 1-1A Blake on Nov. 7.

Senior goalie Abby Cooper made 30 saves in the loss.

Lakeville North needs a strong start to the season to build a resume filled with solid nonconference victories because wins in the South Suburban Conference won't be easy. Nearly half of the teams in the league are ranked or received votes in the preseason poll. Lakeville South is No. 15 and Burnsville is No. 16, while Eastview and Eagan are just outside the Top 20.

Can Edina repeat its dominant season-opening performance? Will Lakeville North bounce back from its shutout loss? Those are questions that can only be answered in our Top Game of the Week.
