Third Period Surge Carries Tigers Past Blaze

The Tigers snapped a five-period scoreless streak with three third period goals to ease by Burnsville 3-2 Tuesday night at the Burnsville Ice Center.

The South Suburban Conference victory pushed Farmington back above the .500 mark for the season (3-2-1) and in league play (2-1-1).

“Any win in the South Suburban is a good win,” Tiger coach Jon Holmes said, “but sometimes wins are still frustrating…It took us being a player down to really get motivated and starting to win races to the puck and finally take control of the pace of play.”

Despite outshooting the Blaze through the first two periods the visitors were down 1-0 headed to the final intermission. They were also down a player after being assessed a five-minute major penalty late in the second period. That’s about the time momentum changed jerseys.

First, Marisa Agerter scored shorthanded on an assist by Kenzie Hauswirth to even the count. Burnsville answered 90 seconds later but Morgan Medved re-tied the game with another shorthanded goal to set up an exciting finish.

Hauswirth provided the clincher with a score midway through the final period on assists from Ellie Moser and Agerter.

Another key to the win was the steady goalkeeping of Emily Auge who tuned away 21 of 23 shots.

“Emily was very solid in the nets tonight,” Holmes said. “She came up big and erased a few mistakes we made defensively.”

As for the win, Holmes said it was somewhat bittersweet.

“There were both positives and negatives,” he said. “Fortunately we were able to come back and get the win, but it was frustrating to see us have to get in that kind of position in the first place.”

Holmes added he thinks his young team will develop what he called some “puck luck” as the season moves on but in the meantime it will have to concentrate on getting out of the gate faster.

“We definitely have to find a way to get ourselves going before the third period if we are going to win consistently in this conference,” he said.

Next up on the schedule is a Friday South Suburban match-up with Lakeville North at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
